Introduction
In 2024, Gro was commissioned to design the landscape architecture at the entrance of Torbay Hospital, a high-profile project that aligns with the principles of biophilic design. This initiative aimed to create a natural, aesthetically pleasing environment that would enhance the experience of visitors, patients, and staff. The design drew inspiration from the nearby Dartmoor landscape, integrating natural elements to promote mental well-being, echoing the NHS’s increasing focus on green social prescribing. Currently in construction, the project stands as a pivotal contribution to the hospital’s landscape infrastructure.


Project Overview
Objective
The key objective of the project was to transform the entrance of Torbay Hospital into a welcoming and therapeutic environment by incorporating green spaces within the wider hospital campus. This approach sought to create a significant landscape feature in a highly visible area, enhancing the overall aesthetics and functionality of the space.
Design Theme
Gro adopted a Dartmoor-themed design, reflecting the natural beauty of the local area. The scheme emphasized the use of simple, clean, and architecturally led elements that would harmonize with the existing structures while introducing naturalistic features inspired by Dartmoor’s rugged terrain.

Site assessment and analysis
On July 2, 2024, Gro conducted a thorough site visit and assessment. The analysis concluded that the entrance location provided an ideal setting for a major landscape feature, given its prominence within the hospital grounds. The assessment emphasized the importance of this area in shaping the overall experience of those who enter the hospital, making it a critical element in the broader landscape design.
Key Considerations

Design Concepts
Gro proposed several initial design concepts to initiate dialogue with the client. These concepts were not definitive but served as a foundation for further discussion.
Tree Planting with Grassed Understory:
- A simple, single-species tree planting scheme with a grassed understory was proposed.
- The design aimed to mimic architectural patterns in an organic form, complementing the surrounding structures.
- This approach would allow the metal screen to appear as if it were emerging from the ground, with the trees providing a natural backdrop.
Prairie-Based Ground Cover with Boulders:
- Another concept involved prairie-based ground cover, with large boulders reminiscent of Dartmoor’s landscape.
- The boulders could serve as seating elements, adding functionality to the aesthetic.
- Cascading planting from the top of retaining walls would soften the hard edges, creating a layered, naturalistic effect.
- This design referenced Dartmoor’s landscape, with planting and boulders providing context and partially screening the retaining wall.
Screen-Focused Design with Low-Level Planting:
- A third concept removed tree planting entirely, making the architectural screen the primary vertical element.
- Low-level ornamental planting would provide a subtle offset, enhancing the screen’s prominence.
- Cascading wall-mounted planting would soften the retaining walls, maintaining a balance between architecture and nature.



Torbay Hospital Biophilic Design Approach
The design was heavily influenced by biophilic principles, which advocate for the inclusion of natural elements in built environments to improve mental health and well-being. - Detailed Planting Plan: A comprehensive planting plan that specifies species, sizes, spacings, and densities.
- Detailed Hardworks Plan: Specifications and locations of materials, including quantities.
- Planting Details and Notes: Guidelines for planting, a 5-year maintenance strategy, and a planting schedule.
The design also includes provisions for site visits and coordination with subcontractors to ensure the successful implementation of the project.
